Hi, I’m Ian Moore and I want to share with you my story of writing a book and how it changed my life. I’m from England, and was born into the working class world of South London. As a young man the thought of publishing my own stories in the land of Shakespeare was not only a distant dream, it was an unreal expectation reinforced every day by the people around me. I did not get an education from one of the great Universities of Oxford or Cambridge, where the ‘real’ writers started their careers. I was just a young man of color who loved to read. I read newspapers, magazines, history books and all the great fiction writers I could get my hands on. My favorite writer was Joseph Conrad, who wrote about travel and adventure. Years later when I traveled Africa, I met African students who introduced me to Alexander Pushkin, the great Russian poet and writer. In fact my travels were caught up with meeting many people who introduced me to lots of different writers and poets.
Years later when I moved to the US I used to talk occasionally to my American friends about my travels. I only thought of my stories as small fillers that I would share at social events by way of introducing myself. Gradually I came to realize that many of the people I met had not had anything like the kind of travel experiences I took for granted. In England, and specifically, Aberdeen, Scotland where I lived for 5 years before coming to America, everybody it seemed traveled. The Scots are a great traveling people, many Scottish people were born in the former British colonies of Africa, India and South East Asia. And the fleet of ships that take off from the Aberdeen harbor every week had been bringing news from around the world to the people of Aberdeen for centuries. As a result I never thought that my stories were anything special or that they were worthy of being published.
However, my friends finally convinced me that some of my stories were of interest to lots of people, and so I began the unlikely task of writing my first book. Like many people I had kept a dairy of my travels, and so I began with them. They were all very personal stories and at first I was unsure about making them public. I also felt that by putting them out into the world I would lose the authenticity of my own experiences. That somehow I would be exploiting them and making them less than they were. Writing helped me answer those questions, and it also helped me to understand how I thought and felt about my life and the world in a better way.
It took me over 10 years to write and publish that first book, which was called CULTURE SHOCK ESSAY, and during that time I learned to appreciate the art and science of writing. What I learned about writing and publishing is what I want to share with you today.
